New program inventory bolsters the 24/7 lifestyle channel
Boston (Jan. 30, 2008) -- American Public Television (APT), in collaboration with Thirteen/WNET New York and WGBH Boston, announced today significant third-year growth for the dynamic 24/7 digital lifestyle channel, Create TV.
As of January 30, 2008, 186 public stations representing nearly 71 percent of U.S. television households will be delivering Create TV in the Channel's third year. "Since the Create channel enters U.S. markets via a subscription from each local public television station, the growth in market penetration by nearly 10% is a real affirmation of what these stations are hearing from their viewers regarding program interests," commented APT President and CEO Cynthia Fenneman. "Public television stations across the country have long seen the value of lifestyle and how-to programming – it is programming that started with public television, and it continues to flourish in this realm. The channel's schedule also effectively complements the programming now typically seen only on public analog stations. Essentially, this dynamic channel allows public stations to grow their footprint in the digital television landscape, helping them garner new audiences while still pleasing their biggest fans."
Since January 2007, Create TV has introduced 29 new shows to its unique program line-up, including James Beard award-winning programs starring chef Todd English, food columnist Mark Bittman, and Gourmet magazine editor Ruth Reichl, among others. These new talents join an already impressive lineup of celebrity hosts such as Ming Tsai – whose program Simply Ming was listed among TIME magazine's "5 TV Food Shows to Sink Your Teeth Into" last year.
Create TV received high praise during consumer research sessions in 2007. Focus groups participants enjoyed the quality content and productions, the broad mix of how-to and lifestyle genres, the informative companion Web site, www.CreateTV.com, and the uninterrupted programs. Of particular interest were the themed "marathon" programs running for an entire weekend day and dedicated to a specific theme including cooking, travel, home improvement, gardening or arts & crafts.
Combining the unique mix of lifestyle programming with available Web content , the Channel's Web site -- www.CreateTV.com -- has become the No.1 listing in a Google search for "create."
Create TV, the 24-hour lifelong learning channel, first launched on Jan. 9, 2006. The channel's appeal consists of: a rich catalog of public television's how-to programs such as America's Test Kitchen and Ask This Old House; an array of celebrity how-to hosts, including artist Bob Ross, travel experts Rick Steves and Rudy Maxa, and internationally recognized chefs Jacques Pépin, Lidia Bastianich and Daisy Martinez; a comprehensive companion Web site, www.CreateTV.com, which carries locally customized station schedules, tips, and more; creative programming such as talent-hosted themed marathons; and the ability for public television stations across the country to deliver this much sought-after programming to their viewers 24/7.
National Create, in addition to providing viewers with strong programming, is designed to help meet the digital multicast-generated demand for additional content across the public broadcasting system.
