AMERICAN PUBLIC TELEVISION ANNOUNCES
MARCH PROGRAM LINE-UP FOR PBS HD SCHEDULE
Boston (Feb. 5, 2008) -- American Public Television (APT), a leading distributor of programming to the nation's public television stations and the first to bring an HD series to public media, announces new programs and specials airing on PBS HD through March.
"APT provides approximately 180 hours of high-definition programming each month and we are eager to continue being a leading provider of HD programming to public television stations," says APT President and CEO Cynthia Fenneman. "This technology has made a seismic difference in the quality of television viewing and our producers are ever-increasing their ability to deliver content in HD to meet that demand."
Beginning in March, APT HD will debut two new programs:
- THE BETTER HOUR: THE LEGACY OF WILLIAM WILBERFORCE (1/60; HD),
a documentary dramatizing the life of William Wilberforce, the British social reformer who led the effort in Parliament to abolish the slave trade in the mid-19th century.

- AMERICA'S TEST KITCHEN FROM COOK'S ILLUSTRATED VIII (26/30; WS),
a new season featuring a no-holds-barred interview with Chris Kimball, who candidly shares some of his culinary pet peeves and kitchen concerns.
APT HD will also honor Women's History Month on Feb. 29 and March 1 with:
- SWEET TORNADO: MARGO JONES AND THE AMERICAN THEATER (1/60; HD), starring Judith Ivey as Margo Jones and Richard Thomas as Tennessee Williams, captures the remarkable life and times of this visionary theater producer-director.
On St. Patrick's Day, APT HD will celebrate all things Eire, with high-definition episodes from:
- SMART TRAVELS — EUROPE WITH RUDY MAXA III ("Dublin and Beyond")
- RICK STEVES' EUROPE III ("Belfast and the Best of Northern Ireland")
- IRELAND: THE ROAD TAKEN WITH TOMMY MAKEM (2/60; WS) features the late folk artist Tommy Makem as he visits Counties Cork, Kildare, Kerry, Tyrone and Down, pausing at each stop along the way to tell a story or sing a song.
APT HD will celebrate Easter's arrival on March 23 with three reverent productions:
- BUFFALO'S HOUSES OF WORSHIP (1/60; HD) highlights the city's sacred architecture — from Roman Catholic churches to Jewish synagogues.
- THE FACE: JESUS IN ART (2/60; HD) and PICTURING MARY (1/60; HD) survey the rare and celebrated artwork depicting Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary throughout the centuries.
Then, mark Major League Baseball's opening day with:
- GREAT MUSEUMS: YEAR OF THE MUSEUM SPECIALS # 201 "The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum: Home Base" (1/60; HD). Learn more about America's favorite pastime during a visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
APT was the first to bring an HD series to the PBS HD channel with Smart Travels – Europe With Rudy Maxa in 2001 and currently provides more than 25 percent of programming to the schedule's line-up. The company's diverse inventory of HD programming is featured in several program blocks on the HD schedule: daily from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Fridays from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., and Saturday mornings from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. (EST). In addition, APT provides HD specials through its syndication service – including A View From Space With Heavenly Music, The Art of Aging: The Limitless Potential of the Brain and Kamuy: The Japanese Brown Bear – that public television stations may schedule locally for their viewers.
