The WORLD℠ 24/7 multicast channel featuring public television’s best documentary, nonfiction and news programming is expanding its content and audience platforms with two grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The grants funded a research and development project focused on increasing access and inclusion for the WORLD service, implementation of an innovative Web presence at www.WORLDcompass.org and the fourth year of the WORLD television channel. Launched in August 2007, WORLD is distributed by American Public Television (APT) and is now carried by 52 licensees/120 stations representing more than 43% of U.S. TV households.
WORLD project collaborators WGBH Boston, New York-based WNET.ORG, and APT, in association with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA), are working to create this new model for public media.
The WORLD public television channel features a mix of popular, signature, nonfiction content – including NOVA, Frontline, PBS Newshour, Nightly Business Report, Need to Know, Voces, Tavis Smiley, Global Voices, Nature, Indepedent Lens, The Future Of News, History Dectives, La Plaza, Scully/The World Show, P.O.V., Consuelo Mack: Wealthtrack and AfroPoP – augmented with fresh and strong titles from talented independent producers.
The goals for WORLD’s expansion focus primarily on a social media strategy, sourcing from a prominent website where viewers may find the television schedule: www.WORLDcompass.org. Linked through social media such as Facebook and Twitter, the site is designed to provide new opportunities for interaction with a broader audience interested in nonfiction material. WORLD broadcast content is expanding correspondingly to provide more diverse programming with theme-based program blocks and related online interactivity.
Key to broadening the audience has been editorial input from public television stations and an important array of organizations committed to civic engagement and representative of the changing American demographic. Those providing input have included the National Minority Consortia (NMC), National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC), Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB), Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC), Native American Public Television (NAPT), Association of Independents in Radio (AIR), L. A. Public Media, and the National Center for Media Engagement (NCME). Together with public television station leaders, representatives from these organizations have contributed to the design and development of project content focused on timely issues appealing to current and fresh audiences.
As WORLD continues to grow, tools such as players and widgets are creating a compelling online location where visitors can view video, listen to audio, and engage with video bloggers through social media – anytime and anywhere. The website is designed to offer the best of public media interactive content and will continually expand to provide station licensees and users with an integrated broadcast/Web service.
